Head of the Charles Recap

hocr_logoThe 2007 Head of the Charles was a great time for all members of NU Crew, past and present. See below for a recap of the results for NU's men, women and alumni:

Saturday Races:

For the second year BCRF was able to offer up its entry in the Charles to interested alumni. This year, the foundation had an entry in the Men's Club Four event (event #13). NU Crew alums Darin Messina (S), Mark Klitgaard (3), Brian Wedel (2) and Derek Roller (B) took to the water with coxswain Jody Koplo.

The race for this four was less than stellar but was a ton of fun. The boat placed 40th of 43 with an unofficial time of 20:31.944. The adjusted time, unfortunately, was 1:40 higher at 22:11.944 because of penalties. Time was taken because about 1 minute into the race two seat's oar snagged a buoy line (and the line actually wrapped around the oar multiple times). This quickly brought the boat to a halt and pulled it completely off the course. After about 45 seconds of untangling the line the four got back on course. Despite this setback everyone enjoyed being a part of the race and getting to row in The Founder, one of NU Crew's brand new shells.

Later on Saturday NU's heavyweight men's four took to the water in the collegiate men's 4+ event (#17). They placed significantly better than the alumni (guess practicing matters) by coming in 8th of 31 with an official time of 17:41.278.

NU's women's collegiate 4+ was next in event #18. They placed 24th of 32 with an official time of 20:51.462.

Finally, NU Crew alumnus Eviatar Frankel competed on behalf of the Lincoln Park Boat Club in the champ men's double event (#25). Facing a tough field he and his partner finished 23rd of 27 with an official time of 19:21.977.

Saturday Night:

On Saturday night NU Crew's founder, Derrick Grava, and his family opened their home to the team and fellow alumni for food and drinks. This is the second year the Gravas have held this event for the team and we are all so grateful for their generosity.

Sunday Races:

Three NU boats raced on Sunday in the early afternoon. First, the men's lightweight 4+ (event #45) went down the river in 17:50.920 to place 16th of 23 boats. Next, the women's lightweight 4+ (event #46) rowed the course in 20:24.834 placing 14th of 16. The men's lightweight 8 (event #47) wrapped up the weekend for NU Crew with a time of 17:47.109.

There was one other prominent NU Crew alum rowing on Sunday afternoon. Former rower and coach Jon Moncton rowed in the champ men's four event (#49) for the Potomac Boat Club (out of Washington, DC). Unfortunately, during the race the boat's rudder cable snapped forcing a scratch.

Despite any setbacks, the weekend was a great time for the team and all the alumni who showed up. This year was by far the best weather most of us had ever experienced at the Charles. Pictures have been posted and can be viewed from the Past Events & Photos page or from the links below:
